This is a perfect cruise call as everything you want to see and do is accessible, so you could easily find yourself walking in St Marks Square in no time at all. With cars being banned from the narrow cobbled streets, you won’t waste time getting around and wherever you walk, there are intriguing museums and galleries plus lots of tasty cafés and restaurants along the way.
Once you are there, you can discover the history of St Marks Square with its ancient Basilica and the impressive landmark piazza, the 300-feet-tall Campanile, a truly stunning piece of architecture. The spectacular Doges Palace is certainly not to be missed with its Venetian Gothic architecture. This opulent residence is steeped in history and lavishly decorated, you can even venture into its gloomy dungeons by way of the Bridge of Sighs.
The Piazzo Marco may be famous, but the ‘Ponte di Rialto’ is the true heart of Venice. The Rialto Bridge has three walkways one of which is between two rows of shops, so you can pick up your little souvenirs’ like jewellery, linens or Murano, glass made on the Island of Murano and you may even want to visit the glass factory itself!
But of course, a visit to Venice would not be the same without a famous gondola ride to take in the sights of the church of San Pietro di Castello and St Elena and enjoy the views of the Grand Canal, but not forgetting you may just want to have a dreamy romantic glide on the city’s most famous form of transport.
